Speaker-Specific Patterns of Frication of Voiceless Stops in Au
نویسندگان
چکیده
The present study examines speaker variability in patterns of frication of the voiceless stops /k/ and /p/ in Australian English. The study was prompted by initial auditory analyses of spontaneous speech data in which fricative realisations of /k/ and /p/ appeared to occur to varying extents for different speakers. Although speakerrelated variability in the distribution of different realisations of voiceless stops has been noted in some studies, e.g. Sangster (2002) regarding Liverpool English, its potential use as a conveyor of speaker-characterising information has not been explored in detail.

Frication of /k/ and /p/ in Australian English: Inter - and Intra-Speaker Variation
Frication of stops occurs when a phonemic stop is produced with incomplete closure such that it is effectively reduced to a fricative. This is a typical connected speech process in dialects of British English, and has also been observed in Australian English. The present study examines patterns of frication of the voiceless stops /k/ and /p/ in Australian English produced by a group of male spe...
متن کاملPharyngeal articulation in the production of voiced and voiceless fricatives.
A structural magnetic resonance imaging study has revealed that pharyngeal articulation varies considerably with voicing during the production of English fricatives. In a study of four speakers of American English, pharyngeal volume was generally found to be greater during the production of sustained voiced fricatives, compared to voiceless equivalents. Though pharyngeal expansion is expected f...
متن کاملGlottal Opening and Strategies of Production of Fricatives
This work investigates the influence of the gradual opening of the glottis along its length during the production of fricatives in intervocalic contexts. Acoustic simulations reveal the existence of a transient zone in the articulatory space where the frication noise level is very sensitive to small perturbations of the glottal opening. This corresponds to the configurations where both fricatio...
متن کاملThe Influence of F0 Discontinuity on Intonational Cues to Word Segmentation: A Preliminary Investigation
The paper presents the results of a 2AFC offline wordidentification experiment by [1], reanalyzed to investigate how F0 discontinuities due to voiceless fricatives and voiceless stops affect cues to word segmentation in accentual-phraseinitial rises (APRs) of French relative to a reference condition with liquid and nasal consonants. Although preliminary due to the small sample size, we found in...
متن کاملPreaspirated /pp tt kk/ in standard Italian: a sociophonetic v. phonetic analysis
This paper investigates preaspiration of geminate stops in Standard Italian /pp tt kk/. We first compare voiceless stops produced in isolated words according to speaker sex and then region (Northern, Central and Southern Italy). We find that the frequency and duration of preaspiration remain relatively stable across these sociophonetic categories. Given these patterns we suggest that the appear...
